Who we are

The Red Sea Institure is registered as a corporate body in Nairobi, Kenya, the Red Sea Institute is a research institution focusing on issues of strategic relevance to the peaceful and constructive cooperation among the countries of the Red Sea basin, including non-littoral states surrounding the Red Sea.

The organization is governed by its statute as a body corporate and is managed by two co-directors who report to an overseeing Board. It maintains and works with a network of highly qualified and experienced professionals, primarily drawn from the region.

The organization also intends to establish strategic collaborations with research institutions, professional networks, civil society organizations, businesses, and state institutions across the Red Sea region and beyond. In carrying out its mandate, it adheres to the values and principles of the United Nations Charter, the International Human Rights Convention, the African Union Constitutive Act, the International Law of the Sea, and recognized international business best practices.

The Red Sea region possesses abundant natural resources and economic potential, including rich marine ecosystems, productive fisheries, valuable seabed resources, and significant opportunities for sustainable tourism, all of which can support jobs, food security, and inclusive coastal development if responsibly managed.

Unlocking the Red Sea’s potential depends on sustained peace maritime security and cooperation supported by regional and international frameworks led by the African Union the Intergovernmental Authority on Development the International Maritime Organization and the Council of Arab and African Coastal States of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

Limits of Existing Frameworks

While regional initiatives exist, their effectiveness is limited by state-centric approaches and lack of trust, highlighting the need for independent actors to foster dialogue, evidence-based policy, and shared regional interests.

Knowledge Gaps on the African Littoral

Research and policy analysis on Red Sea affairs remain limited on the African side, with low maritime awareness, weak research infrastructure, and few platforms for collaboration, despite growing contributions from Middle Eastern institutions.
